SUMMARY:Thinking About Animals - Whales & Others in Captivity
DESCRIPTION:Along with the Sociology Dept. at Brock University\, NAfA is pleased to co-sponsor the upcoming talk presenting Dr. Lori Marino. Lori is a neuroscientist and expert in animal behavior and intelligence. She is also an expert on marine mammal captivity issues and the ‘educational’ claims of the zoo and aquarium industry. In 2001\, she co-authored a ground-breaking study offering the first conclusive evidence for mirror self-recognition in Bottlenose dolphins\, after which she decided against further research with captive animals.\nLori is also the President of the Whale Sanctuary Project. She has appeared in several films and television programs\, including the 2013 documentary Blackfish about killer whale captivity\, and Unlocking the Cage\, the 2016 documentary on the Nonhuman Rights Project.\nHer appearance at Brock is particularly salient at this time\, given the bill making its way before parliament which would make the captivity and breeding of cetaceans a criminal offence in Canada.\nThe event also features Dr. Amy Fitzgerald of the University of Windsor who will speak on Animal Rights and Environmentalism.\nEveryone is Welcome

SUMMARY:Purple Poppy
DESCRIPTION:During human conflicts\, animals have been used as messengers\, for detection & scouting\, as beasts of burden\, on the front lines and more. Roughly 16 million animals were used in WW1 alone; yet their lives and deaths have been largely ignored until recently. \nThe purple poppy is a way to commemorate animals that were and are used during war. The purple poppy is not a replacement for the red poppy; it was created to be worn alongside the red poppy…. not to disenfranchise veterans or the casualties of the great wars\, but to remember the animals who lived and died along with them. \nAnimals living in conflict zones had no choice; like many humans\, they were victims of wars not of their making and over which they had no control. On Remembrance Day\, Niagara Action for Animals remembers these hidden victims….in memory of the millions of animals – including horses\, mules\, donkeys\, camels\, dogs\, pigeons and canaries who were (and are still) used and often killed during war. \n“In the fitful periods of peace in the last century\, there was no armistice for animals\, and monuments to their efforts are few. These non-human casualties remain as an indelible stain on our conscience.” Philip Hoare \nNiagara Action for Animals will provide purple poppies for the 2 weeks leading up to Remembrance Day.

SUMMARY:RETHINKING CANID-HUMAN RELATIONS
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Department of Sociology\, Brock University; Niagara Action for Animals; Social Science & Humanities Research Council of Canada. \nOur relations with canids are particularly intense: we welcome some into our homes as family members but others are regarded as demonic creatures to be exterminated. What do these relations tell us about ourselves and our societies? What do our relations with canids mean for our relations with other animals? What efforts are being made to protect canids from exploitation?\nThis conference focuses on wild and domesticated canids and their relationships and interactions with humans but we encourage contributions that consider implications for human relations with other animals generally.\nPapers are welcomed on topics such as the following:\n• historical & contemporary relations with canids;\n• canids\, commodification\, capitalism;\n• canid behaviour\, cognition\, emotions;\n• canids in art & culture; representation;\n• canid conservation;\n• canids in captivity; zoos;\n• pet-keeping; breeding;\n• canid companions\, housing\, family\n• fighting\, racing\, other forms of exploitation;\n• abuse\, cruelty\, neglect\, violence & law;\n• rescue & sanctuary;\n• community/street dogs;\n• use of canids for food\, fur\, laboratory tools;\n• use of dogs as service & therapeutic tools;\n• cultural imperialism\, postcolonialism\, decolonization & canids.\nWe encourage papers that take a critical perspective and consider trans-species social justice.\nThe conference is organized around the launch of a new book\, Dog’s Best Friend? Rethinking Canid-Human Relations\, co-edited by John Sorenson and Atsuko Matsuoka\, from McGill-Queens University Press – MQUP book page: https://www.mqup.ca/dog-s-best-friend–products-97807735590… \nParticipants include contributors to the book as well as other academics and activists with a particular interest in canids.\nRegistration is free\, the conference is open to all.\nOur keynote speakers are:\nFrancis Battista\, co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society. BFAS operates the largest sanctuary for homeless animals in the USA and provides adoption\, spay/neuter and education programs.\nPeter J. Li\, University of Houston-Downtown. Dr. Li teaches comparative politics and is a specialist on China’s environmental and wildlife policies\, serving as a consultant for international animal welfare organizations.\nWe particularly invite participation from activists working in canid protection efforts\, such as dog rescue groups. Tables will be provided for interested groups\, as space allows.\nOrder vegan meals for conference!: animalconference@brocku.ca\nPayable by cheque to Department of Sociology\, Brock University\nLunch Thursday Lunch #1 is $13.55 including tax\nLunch #2 is $14.68 including tax\nDInner is $25.98 including tax (Payment must be by cheque\, preferably in Canadian dollars.)

SUMMARY:Prison Farms - Sanctuary or Slaughterhouse
DESCRIPTION:Evolve Our Prison Farms was founded in 2016 by Calvin Neufeld and Calvin will be speaking about this project.\nEvolve is a 100% volunteer-run\, supported by experts in law\, criminology\, environmental science\, labour studies\, social work and animal therapy\, as well as hundreds of prisoners and thousands of Canadians. Evolve Our Prison Farms supports plant-based “green” agriculture which could be coupled with a recognized model of animal-assisted therapy (no slaughter or farming of animals). They oppose the government’s intention to establish prison beef and dairy operations\, and using prisoners to butcher animals in an onsite prison abattoir. \nRefreshments will be served. Q&A

SUMMARY:Purple Poppy
DESCRIPTION:Staring on the 26th October/’20 – we will be offering our ‘purple poppy’ in the lead-up to Remembrance Day. \nNiagara Action for Animals wants to remember the hidden victims and will offer members and friends a purple poppy to wear alongside the traditional red one\, in memory of the millions of animals – including horses\, mules\, donkeys\, camels\, dogs\, pigeons and canaries who were (and are still) used and often killed in war. \nAnimals have been used in wars as messengers\, for mine and bomb detection & scouting\, tasked with carrying men & machinery and sent to the battlegrounds. They were and have continued to be subjected to wounding\, biological and chemical experiments\, etc. in defense laboratories. As well\, animals living in areas of combat have no choice; they are caught up as victims of wars. \nAnimals used in wars are not heroes; they are victims. They do not give their lives; their lives are taken. \nIf you would like to wear a purple poppy\, contact us!
