Thinking About Animals – Whales & Others in Captivity

March 21, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Along with the Sociology Dept. at Brock University, NAfA is pleased to co-sponsor the upcoming talk presenting Dr. Lori Marino. Lori is a neuroscientist and expert in animal behavior and intelligence. She is also an expert on marine mammal captivity issues and the ‘educational’ claims of the zoo and aquarium industry. In 2001, she co-authored a ground-breaking study offering the first conclusive evidence for mirror self-recognition in Bottlenose dolphins, after which she decided against further research with captive animals.
Lori is also the President of the Whale Sanctuary Project. She has appeared in several films and television programs, including the 2013 documentary Blackfish about killer whale captivity, and Unlocking the Cage, the 2016 documentary on the Nonhuman Rights Project.
Her appearance at Brock is particularly salient at this time, given the bill making its way before parliament which would make the captivity and breeding of cetaceans a criminal offence in Canada.
The event also features Dr. Amy Fitzgerald of the University of Windsor who will speak on Animal Rights and Environmentalism.
Everyone is Welcome
